I’m someone who prefers to travel light and carry-on only, but when shopping for suitcases I’ve learned that not all so-called “lightweight” suitcases actually deserve the title. Too many of them start at 8 pounds or more—before you’ve even packed a single outfit. Fortunately, Samsonite’s Proxis Carry-On Spinner lives up to the lightweight tag, weighing in at just 4.6 pounds, it’s one of the lightest hard-sided suitcases I’ve ever used—especially impressive considering its spacious interior and sturdy construction.
In this review, I’ll share my honest thoughts on how the Proxis has performed after multiple trips, what sets it apart from other so-called “lightweight” bags, and whether it’s worth its premium price tag.
Samsonite Proxis Carry-On Spinner Overview

The Proxis is noticeably lighter than most suitcases as soon as you pick it up, but it’s still surprisingly durable. I’ve taken it on multiple flights and it’s emerged without a scratch or dent. The bag’s hardsided shell is made from Samsonite’s trademarked Roxkin material, which is strong but lightweight. Dual-spinner wheels and a multi-stop telescoping handle make the suitcase smooth to roll through the airport.
The Proxis is expandable, so I’ve found this suitcase basically doubles as two bags—a small carry-on for short trips that can expand into a larger carry-on for longer trips.
Other useful features include a USB port and dedicated power bank pocket (which I honestly don’t use—since you have to use your own power bank anyway, I prefer to just carry a separate power bank rather than dealing with the built-in cord.)
I do, however, use the suitcase’s two interior zipper pockets, which are very helpful for keeping everything organized. I also like that the compression straps are removable and can be locked into place when in use. The built-in TSA-approved lock is also a nice feature.
