Inn at Thorn Hill Review: The Best Adults-Only Hotel in New Hampshire

Inn at Thorn Hill Presidential Suite

There’s no better way to finish off one of New Hampshire’s most iconic hikes than by soaking in a hot tub and admiring the views of the summit you just conquered. At the Inn at Thorn Hill, where many rooms overlook the Presidential Range, that’s exactly the experience that awaits.

A member of Select Registry, a curated collection of independent lodging, the inn strikes the perfect balance between luxury and quintessential New England bed and breakfast. Every room features a two-person jacuzzi and fireplace, and the adults-only policy keeps the atmosphere accordingly romantic. Whether you’re here to ski, hike, or simply sink into a rocking chair on the wraparound porch with a cocktail, this is one of the best boutique hotels in New England.

Beyond the rooms, there’s no shortage of places to unwind. Curl up in the library beside the double-sided fireplace, make new friends over drinks at the piano bar, or claim a rocking chair on the wraparound porch.

Location

The inn sits on a quiet, wooded stretch just outside the restaurants and shops of downtown Jackson. Surrounded by greenery and mountains, it’s an incredibly peaceful setting while still being just a short drive from some of the state’s best skiing and hiking.

Rooms

The inn has five suites, each uniquely designed and named after a nearby mountain, denoted by a charming hand-painted sign on the door. I stayed in the Presidential Suite, which is larger than some apartments. The suite features a spacious bedroom with views of the Presidential Range and Mount Washington Valley (on a clear day, you can see the actual summit), a gas fireplace, a plush four-poster bed, a separate sitting room with a wet bar, and a massive bathroom with a two-person spa tub and steam shower.

In addition to the suites, the inn offers 11 hotel-style rooms, each with its own layout and personality. All rooms include double vanities, jacuzzi tubs, Rerum Natura bath products, and cozy robes. For more privacy, two historic cottages sit a short distance from the main inn, and a six-bedroom carriage house is available for larger groups.

Dining

Forty at Thorn Hill Wine Cellar

Forty at Thorn Hill is the area’s go-to special occasion restaurant, drawing in both hotel guests and locals celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. In good weather, a table on the outdoor porch with mountain views is the obvious choice; in cooler months, the airy dining room with its wood-fired fireplace is the place to be.

The kitchen leans into locally sourced, seasonal ingredients with an elevated take on hearty comfort food, serving classics like a half chicken slow-roasted in a honey and thyme brine with sherry butter, or a charcuterie board built around Vermont 10-year cheddar and local fig jam.

The newly rebuilt wine cellar is a must-visit for oenophiles. You can reserve the space for a private, chef-curated tasting menu with wine pairings for up to eight guests, or book a spot on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays for the wine and whiskey tastings led by the inn’s award-winning bartender.

A complimentary gourmet breakfast is included with every stay. Coffee, juice, and a yogurt and fresh fruit parfait are served to start, and are followed by an à la carte menu with options like French toast and eggs Benedict. It’s a proper send-off before a day on the mountain.
