Hotels.com Gift Card Merge: Two Important Things You Need to Know

Hotels.com Gift Card

For me, the gift of travel is better than any physical item anyone could ever give me, so I always ask for a Hotels.com gift card for birthdays, Christmas, etc. Hotels.com is the only hotel booking site I’ve found that issues gift cards. However, there are some annoying things you need to know if you want to use more than one Hotels.com gift card to book your trip.

How to Do a Hotels.com Gift Card Merge

You can only use one Hotels.com gift card per reservation, which is frustrating if you have a trip that costs $200 and two $100 gift cards. You’ll need to merge your two gift cards together to use them at the same time. You can merge your Hotels.com gift cards at their Balance Merge site.

Unfortunately, you can only merge a maximum of two gift cards together—so if you have three or more cards you want to use, you’ll have to call Hotels.com’s gift card services at 1-888-999-4468 or email: giftcards@hotels.com.

Now, here’s the really frustrating part. Even if you have the gift card number and pin number, if you want to merge two or more cards together, Hotels.com will only do it if you provide a bunch of different information.

When I called to merge multiple gift cards, I had to provide:

  1. The original amount of the gift card
  2. Where the gift card was purchased
  3. The date the gift card was purchased (different than the date I received it)
  4. The name of the gift card purchaser

When I emailed Hotels.com asking to merge the cards, I had to provide “an image of proof of payment for all cards, in the form of a paper receipt from the store or a confirmation email which should contain the email and name.”

Obviously, this can be quite awkward to ask for if you don’t know the person who gave you the gift card, or impossible if you got it through a raffle or giveaway.

Can You Use OneKey Cash With a Gift Card?

The other really annoying thing about the Hotels.com gift card is that you cannot combine one with OneKeyCash. OneKeyCash is the rewards program that Hotels.com switched to, replacing their previous amazing rewards program of one free night for every 10 nights stayed. The OneKeyCash rewards are much lower value than the previous program.

You cannot redeem your OneKeyCash at the same time you’re using a Hotels.com gift card. So you’ll have to make separate reservations to use them up.
