If you’re traveling in Chile, you might find yourself at a restaurant wondering, “Do you tip in Chile?” The answer is: it depends. How much and when (if at all) you should leave a gratuity depends on the situation.
Generally, you should tip around 10 percent of the bill in Chile.
Do You Tip in Chile?
Restaurants and bars in Chile include a suggested tip with the bill, called the “propina,” which is at least 10 percent of the total. We recommend paying the suggested tip, but you can always add on more if you had exceptional service.
Restaurants
At a sit-down restaurant in Chile, you should tip a minimum of 10 percent of the bill. If you’ve had great service, tip closer to 15 percent.
Cafes
At cafes or casual restaurants in Chile, you can simply round up the bill as a tip. For example, if your total was 19 Chilean pesos, leave 20 pesos.
Bars
At bars in Chile, a 10 percent suggested tip will be added on to your bill at the end. Although this is optional, it’s typical to pay without protest.
Hotels
Hotel staff, including housekeeping, bellhops, and valets, should be tipped in Chile. For bellhops, tip 500-1,000 CLP per bag. For housekeeping, leave between 5-10 CLP in your room each day that it gets cleaned.
