Some trips are relaxing. Some are life-changing. You wake up to mysterious mountain mist, bird calls ringing through the forest, and the exciting possibility that today you might lock eyes with a 400-pound gorilla who is quietly judging your cardio fitness. Welcome to gorilla trekking in Uganda.

Here’s everything you need to know about gorilla trekking in Uganda, including the best tours and where to stay.

Why Uganda Is the Best Place for Private Gorilla Trekking

Uganda is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is exactly as dramatic as it sounds. No, you won’t need to “impenetrate” anything yourself (your private guides will handle bushwacking through the forest as needed). But you will feel like you’re starring in your own National Geographic special.

Their deep local roots mean you’re in good hands, and they’re well-versed in weaving together gorilla trekking with other wildlife experiences.

The Best Gorilla Trekking Hotels in Uganda

Many lodges can actually help you book your gorilla trekking tours directly, so if there’s a lodge you have your heart set on, you can just start there. Below are our favorite hotels in Uganda.

  1. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge: Perched on a volcanic ridge in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi, this lodge is built from local stone and thatch, blending into the landscape. Inside, you’ll find huge fireplaces, a private butler, and panoramic views of the Virunga volcanoes.
  2. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp: Located directly inside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, this intimate camp has just a handful of luxury tents, each with a forest-facing veranda and private bathtub.
  3. Bwindi Lodge (Volcanoes Safaris): Eco-luxury bandas, private decks, and a quiet, forest-focused design make this a favorite.
  4. Mahogany Springs Lodge: In the Buhoma sector, these suites offer private terraces, outdoor showers, and even plunge pool.
  5. Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge: Set high on a ridge, the suites have fireplaces, sweeping forest and volcano views, and walk-out access toward trekking trailheads.

Best Time to Go for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season, which occurs June through September and December through February. Trails are firmer, visibility is better, and trekking conditions are generally more comfortable.

You’re more likely to experience rainy conditions during “green” or shoulder seasons, which are March through May and October through November. However, there are plenty of pros for traveling during this period as well. The forest is lush, insect life peaks, and fewer tourists which mean less crowded treks and lower rates on lodges.

Gorilla Trekking Tips

  • Book early. Gorilla permits are limited and sell out quickly. Lock in your permits or book your guided trip before booking your lodge or plane tickets.
  • Hire a porter. It’s common (and very helpful). Porters carry your gear, make the hike easier, and you support local livelihoods.
  • Bring small bills for tipping. Local guides, porters, and lodge staff often appreciate tips; many travelers carry small US$ denominations.
  • Be camera-ready, but respectful. Turn off the shutter sound, move slowly, and always follow your ranger’s instructions.
  • Health & safety: Stay up to date on your vaccinations, carry hand sanitizer or wipes, and follow the 7-meter viewing rule unless your guide/rangers advise otherwise.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

  • Long-sleeved, quick-dry shirts and pants to protect against nettles and bugs.
  • A good rain jacket or poncho. Even in dry season, rain can surprise you.
  • Waterproof hiking boots  and extra socks.
  • Lightweight gloves for handling rough vegetation.
  • A walking stick (many trekking companies provide one, but you can also bring your own).
